The name Poway is derived from the word “Pau-wi” which loosely translated means “meeting or end of valleys”. The word “Pau-wi” came form the local Indians that lived in the area when the missionaries came to the area. Originally the Poway Valley was named “Paguay” by the Spanish settlers. Poway was used primarily by the Missionaries as a cattle and stock. A land grant was given to Rosario Aguilar in 1839. The first known U.S. settler to settle Poway after the Land became part of the United States was Phillip Crosthwaite in 1859. Crosthwaite sold his land and Ranching continued on the land. In 1874 California passed a law forcing ranchers to keep their cattle fenced and off of farmers’ lands and crops. This was too much for the ranchers and they moved on to greener less regulated pastures. The economy from then on became more agricultural than ranching based. The Post Office came to town in 1870 and the Postmaster officially recognized the name of the area to be Poway. The name was now official and has been ever since. Poway began to have many farms, orchards and vineyards. The population of Poway in 1887 was about 800 people. A railway was planned on coming into Poway but never materialized. In 1950 water came into Poway and in 1954 the Poway Municipal Water District was formed. In 1957 sewer service was brought to Poway and large scale home building in Poway began in 1959. The city of Poway incorporated in 1980. Today Poway is known as “The City in The Country” which is more like “The Country in The City”. It has a much laid back country town feel and its real estate varies from small homes to large expensive estates to ranches. There are still lots of horse activity in Poway although much of the ranching and farming has moved on.
